Changing design of Webasyst Shop-Script Manually. Files and folders.

Template files are located in /published/SC/html/scripts/repo_themes/theme_name, they are not entirely defining styles though, but override styles defined as basic in /published/SC/html/scripts/themes/demo/. Folder /published/SC/html/scripts/templates/frontend/ contains HTML pieces of the page as in previous versions using Smarty template engine. Please be careful if you work on a live store and make sure to create backups beforehand. Please also note that changes made to specified files and folders manually will be overwritten during automated updated with 99.9% certainty. Only changes made with built in design editor will be kept. Those are stored inside published/publicdata/%DB_KEY%/attachments/SC/repo_themes/ where %DB_KEY%is the internal WebAsyst name of your database as set during install.

A couple of question in regard to this:

About the automated update, when or how often these occur..?

Am I understanding this right: if I make changes to any files, they will basically be overwritten..?  Even the files in /published/SC/html/scripts/templates/frontend/...?   Or were you just talking about the template files..?

How can I customize a site and note have it demolished when an update occurs..?

Thanks

Forgot:  what about changes made to the PHP core files...?
They get overwritten as well..?

Hope not, that's not a good thing....

Re: Changing design of Webasyst Shop-Script Manually. Files and folders.

Your data such as template design, product pictures, etc. is stored in following folders:

data/DBKEY/ — secure protected folder (product files, storefront design customizations that you've made using built-in design editor)
published/publicdata/DBKEY/ — files with public access (product pictures, product images)

All files stored in this folder will not be changed. All other files (including published/SC/html/scripts/) will be overwritten with the files from update.

I'm sorry if I seem to ask easy/newbie questions, it's just that I'm used to how Shop-Script Premium was functioning...

1- So how often will there be automated update.???
2- How can I do a major customization (basically changing ALL files in published\SC\html\scripts\templates\frontend + email files WITHOUT DESIGN EDITOR) and not have my site revert back to original form..???

Thanks

I am in the same position as pnichols above - I need to do layout customizations that are not done from design editor and not have them get overwritten every time there are bug fixes, etc.  This "new" overwriting functionality is completely different from how Shop-Script Premium was to function.

I really need help on this as well - I chose this product for a client site from the demo of Shop-Script Premium that I downloaded.  I have been suprised at all of the differences when purchasing this new version and this particular one could kill my client's website.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Absolutely agree with both of you, this is definately not good. I really like the Premium version, decided to upgrade only because the new version has discount coupons implemented. But now it seems I've made a bad decision.
The new template system is ridiculous as the built-in design editor is useless.

What if I create a new theme with an original name, upload it to /published/SC/html/scripts/repo_themes/mynewtheme
Will it stay or will it be removed after the automated update?

Update: no, it doesn't work, the shop doesn't find it.

So is there any way to have a custom design?

The admin area is definitely, cleaner.   I like many of the new features too.  Not to thrilled with the templates system though.  I don't want cookie cutter sites.  I like making my own whole new template.  I know I still can but, if it's going to over written, whats the point.  Yea I can make backups, but I don't want to have to go back through and fix it if there's an auto update.  At the very least is there a means to disable auto updates?  I prefer doing that kind of stuff manually anyway.

Is there a ".inc" or themes config file that I can add a template, name, location to?   This would at least mean only one file to replace down the road after a update.

Thanks

Re: Changing design of Webasyst Shop-Script Manually. Files and folders.

Looks like I've found kind of a solution – you have to copy one of the themes located in /published/SC/html/scripts/repo_themes/
to published/publicdata/your DBKEY/attachments/SC/themes/ and edit it to meet your needs. The bad thing is that the theme is completely dependant on template files located in the /published/SC/html/scripts/templates/frontend/ which will be overwritten during the automated update. This also means, that the CSS names and ids also depend on the ones used in /published/SC/html/scripts/templates/frontend/ template files.

So it's obvious that is really NOT POSSIBLE to have an original design any more! Or you will have to backup all the template files before every update. This also means you will have to close the shop every time this occurs – you don't want your customers to see the pre-installed theme instead of your own, do you?

Yep, it seems that we're stuck with going through hoops just to get a personalized website.
It seems they decided to move toward a non-techie crowd with this new release...  All that built-in editor non-sense.

And as we can see, apart from being told: No, it's on our wishlist.....   Not possible.....    Coming soon.....    Next update.....
Well we don't get any help at all...

On that note, I'm asking you guys your experience with other shopping cart software (or webasyst included).
What's the best/worst alternative if you really want to customize everything in a cart..??

I think the old pro and premium are way better for customization. The new template system is a drama. It would be better if you could choose between the old and new system.
Overall, the new structure of shop-script got way to complicated.

Agreed.  For the non techie crowd is right.  I understand the reasoning for it, but what a mess.  This really sucks.  I was reselling it with hosting and site design.  Looks like I'll be back on the market for a tech friendly shopping cart with the same features.  At this rate maybe I'd be better off making my own.

Re: Changing design of Webasyst Shop-Script Manually. Files and folders.

I wanted to note I did find some tricks around the big brother style architecture.  I'm using the demo theme, at least it has no images to start with.  Then I grabbed a copy of the template in the design editor then with my REAL editor re-wrote, added my own code & scripts in a safe directory.  Considering the rest is all css coloring I can handle that through the editor as well meaning my "custom" template is in use and safe from updates.

Note to the programmers and sellers of this software. PLEASE consider adding a custom template module in similar to that in PRO & Premium.  Work with other programmers out there.

In my ten years of design & construction I've only met a handful of people that have customized and worked on their own site.  When it comes down to most businesses, many like to close there eyes and say DO IT FOR ME.

I managed to make quite some nice modifications to the old shop in not to much time. In order to mod this shop it will take me ages to figure everything out as I am not a pro. I do think a lot of the new features are very useful for my company.
I am not the end user and I do like that my low-tech personal now can change more than before. Also the automatic resizing of pics is great in this. Also some things I made myself are now included in shop-script. I am now trying to decide whether to use the upgrade of for now stick with the old. But for that I need to study the source more. If it does not take me to long to get acquainted I will switch. Else I might look for some other solution.

For those fearing that their changes will be lost during an update, I would like to say that the old way of upgrade installation process (where you would download distributive, unpack it, and overwrite only .php files that have changed) is still an option.

Oh good!  That saves me one heck of a headache.  Now where do I find that setting I've been back and forth, up and down in the admin area and I see nothing for it.  Is it in a file or sql entry?

Thanks

Hy, in fact the distributive download copy can be found only in the customer center under the downlaod tab, where you'll also find old shop-script versions to be downloaded.

Re: Changing design of Webasyst Shop-Script Manually. Files and folders.

I just can't believe that when I updated the shopping cart today, I lost all of my changes to the frontend files. The changelog only stated that there were changes to the kernel. Word of advice : DO NOT BELIEVE what the change log says because the update from 307 to 308 changed ALOT more than just what's in the kernel folder.

It was a good thing that I chose to backup my files before the update (just in case). My boss probably would have fired me if I had accidentally chose to update the site without saving all of my interface changes.
