Does anyone have any experiences to share related to promotional or advertising tactics, what has worked and what hasn't?
The SEO-awareness of Shop-Script is one of the main reasons we had for selecting it. We're still in the process of customizing it and loading our catalog, but once we have something up and running we'll also check out the newsletter capabilities. Right now we use a service to mail our newsletter, and we generally see a bump in business so it seems our customers like what we're doing.
We also have an ad campaign through Project Wonderful, which seems to produce fairly good results. Such as, when we neglect it for a few days and get outbid, our orders fall off. When we pump our ads onto a bunch of new sites, we get some orders.
We also use Google AdWords, but that doesn't seem as effective. Feels like a "gotta do it," though.
What kind of metrics do you watch? How do you decide what to stick with, and what to drop?

Alex is right, social bookmarking, Facebook fanpage and twitter are really helpful for this purpose

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a website web presence.

Search engine marketing, or SEM, is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of search engine optimization, paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.[

I just finished adding a "Like" button to my pages, and now I look at the WebAsyst blog and what do I see? FB integration in the new update! (facepalm)
I've been tweaking the templates a lot lately to make my site's content more available to search spiders. In particular, I've been working on getting the category pages to be meatier, because when they're nothing but stepping stones with no real content of their own the spiders sometimes lose interest and don't reach the product screens or other end-of-the-line content. So far it seems to be working, although the t-shirt search space is so competitive it's nearly impossible to rank for the broad keywords.

I see SEM as a rather broad term. It's everything that can be done to utilize the technology of search engines with the goal of promoting a web site and increasing its traffic, its "stickiness," and, in the case of sites that promote a business (or are a business), increase profits. SEO, therefore, would be a subset of SEM.

SEO is the most effective in generating web traffic and there are now few marketers that used SEO to get successful and be a good marketer. Sometimes SEO can help you find some online job opportunity.

Can I suggest that you check out IBusness Promoter (IBP) you will not regret using this software. Guarantees google first page, use adwords. I would probably expect you are using Alexa for Web Information and monitoring (free). I can only tell you what I have experienced from using this software, no ppc needed yet, not using facebook or twitter. My worldwide traffic ranking from Alexa was over 7,000,000 now down to 364k in 4 months, dropping daily. I will eventually add facebook and twitter, but I think the priority is sorting your SEO. I would say that I am in the novice group in terms of understanding even WebAsyst ShopScript, which is evident on some of my posts. I would suggest it is worth a look!
cheers

For SEO Google will consider at first on page seo because on page seo is more valuable than off page seo. 80% on page works for optimizing a website. I also appreciate white hat Method for it. Thanks!
